With
the help of the nations top nutritionists, trainers and life coaches, overweight chefs

weight and live a healthier lifestyle. The

We challenged Michael to create four desserts, three popular holiday items and one

DoraNonnie
Tapas & Wine Bar Is Now Open!
You’ll
find DoraNonnie Tapas and Wine Bar within Bernard’s Market of Glen Head. The high-end
market makes a remarkable transformation at night into a modern designed dining room
with an extremely cozy and welcoming environment. The restaurant features high ceilings,
intimate lighting and interesting culinary quotes are cleverly displayed on the walls. There is
also a nice sized bar area where patrons can relax and enjoy drinks from an impressive
list of fine wines and domestic and imported beers.
The
talent behind the delicious cuisine of DoraNonnie is executive chef, Danny Gagnon. Danny
is best known for his Italian/Asian fusion style of cooking and also for his
participation on Bravo’s hit TV show, Top Chef. He has been “wowing” patrons
across Long Island for years and was recently named The Best Chef of Long Island 2011.
The restaurant is actually named after Danny’s grandmothers, Dora and Nonnie, who
influenced him at a young age and always advised him to cook from the heart and keep
family in mind. Prior to working at DoraNonnie, Danny lent his culinary expertise to the
Babylon Carriage House, East By Northport, Harvest on Ford Pond and Pacific East.
We
began our meal with the Sweet Soy Calamari tossed with fire roasted red peppers, shaved
scallions and flat leaf parsley. The presentation was beautiful and the aroma was
extremely enticing. The calamari were very tender, sweet and featured a slight hint of
heat.
The
Long Island Duck Tacos, dollopped with avocado mousse and pickled radish, are another
beautifully presented appetizer. The crispy, hand made and hand fried wonton shells were
superb and combined with the collective flavors from the interior ingredients created a
flavorful treat for our palates.
Next
we sampled one of their four available flatbread pizzas. The Grilled Asparagus and Feta
Flatbread Pizza is drizzled with an Italian basil marinara and the thin crust is cooked
to a desirable crisp. It is an ideal offering to share amongst the table.
The
Pan Seared Scallops, served in a saffron parsnip puree with sautéed cherry tomatoes and
finished with a fricassee of mushrooms, were incredibly tender and pan seared to
perfection. All of the flavors unite to create yet another enjoyable dish.
We
ended our dining experience with an outstanding dessert – the Lemon Pistachio Cake
drizzled with honey, candied pistachios and a strawberry and lime puree. Danny suggested we pair it with the Kopparberg Strawberry and Lime Cider, an
imported beer from Sweden. The cake was exceptionally moist, dense and downright
delicious, pairing perfectly with the cider. This sweet treat would serve as a superb finish to any meal!

Mamma
Mia - It's National Pizza Month
As
if we needed an excuse to eat pizza, believe it or not, there's actually an entire month
dedicated to one of America's favorite foods. National Pizza Month was founded in 1987,
and since then the month of October has been honoring pizza's 30 billion dollar
industry.
With
over 700 pizzeria's on Long Island, we are lucky enough to have numerous options when it
comes to indulging. Attilio's Pizza
in Roslyn Heights has been in business for almost 20 years and offers a wide variety of
delicious pizza's. Not only do they offer the classic Regular and Sicilian slices, but
also some signature slices including Buffalo Chicken, Shrimp and Garlic, Baked Ziti and
Chicken Francese. Gino's
Tuscany has four convenient locations on Long Island (Islip, Bethpage, Massapequa
Park and North Bellmore) and presents a wide array of options when it comes to good
pizza. Treat yourself to one of their many signature slices like their Crostina Pizza
featuring sliced tomato and homemade mozzarella cheese on a thin crust pan pizza with a
drizzle of balsamic, oil and basil. Gino's also offers whole wheat pizza pies as a
healthier alternative. Stella's
Pizzeria Cafe in Bellmore is another great option during National Pizza Month. Here
they offer pizza with classic toppings, specialty toppings including Rigatoni Ala Vodka
and Eggplant Ricotta as well as slices with gourmet toppings like tasty Honey Dijon
Chicken. Frank's
Gourmet Pizza & Restaurant offers a variety of pizza's including specialty
pizza's and brick oven pizza's. Aside from your standard favorites, visit Frank's and
enjoy a specialty pizza like the Seafood Lovers Delight which features sliced shrimp and
baby clams, plenty of cheese with a scampi style sauce. Another standout pizza is the
Hawaiian Luau topped with chunky tomatoes, cheese, lean ham and dole pineapple chunks. Americans
eat about 100 acres of pizza a day, which amounts to about 350 slices consumed per
second. Be sure to satisfy your pizza cravings during National Pizza Month!

It's
National Chicken Month!
For roughly two decades, the National Chicken Council has brought together all major
U.S. chicken producers to help promote chicken sales throughout the month of September.
Grocery stores, chicken producers and even restaurants celebrate this national holiday
by offering chicken related promotions to their clientele.
The
place to visit during National Chicken Month is Churrasqueira
Bairrada Restaurant in Mineola, where they serve authentic Portuguese cuisine like
no other! Here they use only real wood charcoal briquettes in preparing their entrees
and in this respect, they are the only restaurant in the area that prepares its food in
that traditional, natural way.
Their
BBQ Chicken is without a doubt a must have when you visit. Churrasqueira sells
approximately 6,000 chickens per month, and once you sample it you’ll see why. With
the first bite you can immediately taste the delicious BBQ, flame broiled taste in the
tender, juicy chicken, and when served with a side of homemade potato chips creates an
ideal meal.
Chicken
is the most cost-effective, tasty protein choice out there and if you’re looking for a
flavorful way to celebrate National Chicken Month, be sure to stop by Churrasqueira!

Black and Blue as Waiter Of The Year and San Marco Ristorante as Restaurant Of The Year.
The numbered,
limited edition, hand polished award medal, designed by a lifelong member of the American
Numismatic Association and commissioned to the same company that creates the
medals for the Kennedy Center, was simply stunning. Following the Private
Awards Ceremony attendees were treated to a hand crafted, replica cake that resembled
the official Gold Medal. It was obvious, no expense
was spared in making this private awards ceremony a wonderful experience for the
nominees and their guests.

May
Is National Hamburger Month!
May
marks the month that we honor our Mothers and it’s almost time to honor our Fathers
– but before that, lets honor our burgers during National Hamburger Month!
Burgers
have become a true bite in American history and there are nearly as many ways to get
your burger fix, as there are people who like to eat them! Hamburgers are a popular item
on everyone’s menu because there are such a wide variety of options when it comes to
this simple delicacy.
Frank-N-Burger
in St. James offers a wide variety of exclusive burgers on their menu. You have the
option to create your own burger using their extensive list of available ingredients, or
order one of their popular, signature burgers like the Swamp Burger (bacon,
lettuce, tomato, sautéed onions, mushrooms, ketchup and mustard) or the Madusa
Burger Combo (chili, cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and ketchup).
Port
Royal Grille in Islip is no stranger to exclusive, signature burgers either. In fact,
the burgers served there give a whole new meaning to comfort food as they’re
enormously portioned. If you choose to celebrate National Hamburger Month here you’ll
have to order the Triple Decker Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger. If you think the title
alone is a mouthful you should see the burger itself! To best describe this outrageous
burger, it’s a bacon burger sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches and it is
truly a sight to see!
If
you're looking for a delicious burger with more of a gastro pub feel then look no
further than Page
One Restaurant in Glen Cove. Page One offers a number of one of a kind burgers
including their Greek Burger (served on a pita with tzazki, shredded lettuce, onions and
tomatoes tossed in Greek dressing) and their Asian Pork Burger (Asian spiced and grilled
with kimchee cucumbers).
Barefoot
Peddler in Greenvale has been serving outstanding burgers and great saloon food since
1976 and will wow you with their fabulous selection of burgers. Here you will find tasty
burgers including their North Shore Burger, served with peppers, onions and mozzarella
cheese and their Inside Out Burger which features bacon, onions and melted Swiss cheese
stuffed inside their sirloin.
When
on the South Shore, be sure to stop in at the Wellwood Grille in Lindenhurst for their
Classic "Build Your Own" Burger which consists of a generous half pound of
fresh ground beef with all the traditional toppings to choose from.
Although
it may not seem like a well-known holiday, National Hamburger Month is considered a
true, commemorative celebration that is celebrated by millions of people across the
world. So take your part in celebrating and order a good ol’ burger next time you dine
out!

Cooking With The Chef Night
Attending
Cugini Restaurant's Cooking With The Chef 5 Course Dinner proved to be exceptional.
We experienced an authentic Italian cooking demonstration from Chef Guiseppe, and
explored some delicious flavors inspired by old world recipes.
Cugini’s
chef started us off with a surprise appetizer of hand-made stuffed zucchini that was
delicious. Then we went onto a refreshingly
crisp and well balanced garden salad, followed by our choice of rigatoni bianchi or
penne marinara. The rigatoni bianchi
consisted of sautéed chicken, broccoli, and ripe plum tomatoes in a delightful cream
sauce. Guests were able to choose from
pollo giardino, eggplant rollatini, or tilapia oreganata for their entrée course.
The tilapia was filleted and topped with seasoned breadcrumbs and sautéed in a
white wine and lemon sauce.
Guests
concluded their experience with coffee and a choice of two desserts, Italian cheesecake
or gelato rustico. Cugini Restaurant offers their Cooking With The Chef Series several
times during the year.

Have
A Drink With Dirty Sue
Dirty Sue is twice-filtered olive juice brine made from premium olives and comes
in an attractive bottle made to be stored alongside other bar staples such as Rose's
Lime Juice, sweet & sour and grenadine. It allows bartenders to simply grab and
pour, instead
of the spooning, scooping and handling of that industrial size jar of
olives that sits behind the bar. As any martini lover knows, the brine
all-too-often gets used up before the olives do, leaving the olives to rot and go to
waste. For more

For
The Love Of Olives
We had the opportunity to try some innovative and refreshingly delicious specialty
items created by European-based Company, King Cuisine.
Among
our sampled products
was a variety of sauces, salad dressings, and of course the sensational olives, all
made with only the freshest ingredients.
The dressings were contained in a unique plastic bottle with a pump to distribute
evenly over a salad. Flavorful herb-infused sauces made pasta and sandwiches a
unique gourmet creation.
The olives were crisp, dressed lightly with oil, garlic, and herbs and without too
much salinity. Much time goes into selecting the diverse varieties and quality
levels of the olives, which are imported from several different countries.
There
is no question as to why this company is considered a front-runner in Mediterranean
specialties. There is a sense of European inspiration emanating from these inventive
and carefully made items. We certainly recommend any culinary enthusiast to
experience some of King Cuisine’s delectable product line.
