It was a bright and sunny day on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, a perfect day for the
roaring twenties themed Garden Party 2013 at OHEKA Castle in Huntington, New York.
It was “A Great Gatsby-Style Affair” celebrating the Otto Kahn Awards Program and the 30th anniversary of Gary Melius discovering OHEKA. OHEKA Castle is the second largest home built in the United States and was built to be the highest point on Long Island. The name OHEKA is an acronym of Otto HErman KAhn, who built OHEKA Castle about a century ago.

The party was held in the perfectly manicured Formal Gardens (above left). Many were clad in costume for the occasion sporting their flapper dresses and feathered hair pieces (above right). In the background played music by students of Walt Whitman High School. When supper was served, the Chamber Orchestra was playing their symphonies. After their last chord was struck, the programme continued with the presentation of the seven recipients of the Otto Kahn Award after the National Anthem was sung (below left).

Annually, Friends of Oheka show their support for the arts by awarding scholarships to talented students from Walt Whitman and Northport high schools who intend to continue their education in the fine arts, performing arts, and music. They were recognized for their outstanding achievements. A few students sang solo opera pieces (above right). Their voices were phenomenal. Afterwards, the Jazz Band (below center) played their melodies as dessert was served (below right).

All of the students who performed that night are truly gifted in the arts. They put on a remarkable performance. During this gathering, some were seated at each one of the white linen-clad tables (below left) or roaming about the gardens casually chatting with one another. All were free to walk about the estate and admire the French-style architecture and furnishings. It was a relaxed late afternoon in the gardens.
